Joan Silver Pin is an experimental electro-acoustic / jazz fusion band from Moscow, with core members also active in other bands. While "jazz fusion" usually results in a mental alarm blaring off in my head, this album couldn't be further away from the pompous noodlings that the tag might evoke. This is seductive music that shape-shifts from post-rock to electronic ambient to jazz, but cleverly enough to avoid the pitfalls of a confused mish-mash of genres. The arrangements are atypical but never aimless, and the combination of electronics, female vocalizations and traditional instruments (namely the trumpet) inspired and carefully crafted. In short, a great reward for adventurous ears courtesy of RAIG.
