FLATLINE SKYLINE

flatline skyline is the collaborative project of robert andrew scott and jacen kemp.

"the two musicians began working together in late 2002, shortly after meeting in a science fiction literature class in virginia. their early recordings were live and highly improvisational noise experiments. however, a strong sense of melody and structure always lay beneath, and over time, the fusion of these elements grew in scope to become the group's primary focus.

they originally were known by the name "mutemath," and released their first track, an early instrumental version of "three winter months," on the zaftig research compilation entitled "winter." the duo sold the rights to their name in 2003 and used the money to further their musical efforts. they adopted the name "flatline skyline," from one of their developing songs.

flatline skyline's first album, "horizon grid," was released with the mechanoise-labs label (fr) in mid-2005. the album is a collection of textured, melodic, and rhythmic songs, with often-somber and reserved vocals guiding the myriad of sounds. aspects of industrial noise, IDM, new wave, and post-punk show up, but flatline skyline is miles from any genre.

currently, the pair is working on material for a second album. in sharp contrast to their first album, which rings with restrained tension, the new songs find that tension in a state of cathartic release. the new tracks are more aggressive, texturally dense, and melodically forward- confirmation that flatline skyline is a highly versatile and evolving group."
